Enrichment
Enrichment @ Boston High School
Enrichment at BHS, encompasses careers, RSHE (Relationship, Sex and Health Education), citizenship and finance. Careers information can be found here on our careers page.
From years 7-11, pupils have one lesson of Enrichment a fortnight covering key elements of all these areas.
This is our Enrichment curriculum for September 2022:
Both pupils and parents/carers have been consulted in the planning of Enrichment lessons and have had the opportunity to provide feedback.
RSHE (RELATIONSHIP, SEX AND HEALTH EDUCATION)
Timeline of RSHE development
We study RSHE to gain the knowledge and understanding to develop the confidence to make our own choices with regards to our own bodies, and to respect the choices of others.
The Department for Education has published the first changes in twenty years to relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) ready for September 2020. A full account of this guidance can be found: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education
Miss Biscoe wrote to parents and carers in March 2020 to invite them to contribute to a consultation of the RSHE curriculum, as parents and carers were provided with the suggested Enrichment curriculum plan, which pupils had already provided feedback on. Another consultation of parents and students was carried out in July of 2021. This was fed into the new plan for September 2022. Thank you to everyone who contributed their opinions.
Taking into account the opinions of our pupils, parents, carers and staff, we have now updated our RSHE curriculum, so that we can be sure our RSHE provision is appropriate for our pupils, as per the Government’s requirements around ‘protected characteristics’, based on their age, sex, gender, physical or emotional maturity, race, religious or cultural background, special educational needs or disabilities, or orientation.
Relationships and Sex Education will build on the teaching at primary. It aims to give our young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds. We will cover content on what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like and what makes a good friend, colleague and successful marriage or committed relationship. At the appropriate time, the focus will move to developing intimate relationships, to equip our pupils with knowledge they need to make safe, informed and healthy choices as they progress through adult life.
By the end of secondary school, pupils will have been taught content on:
-
families
-
respectful relationships, including friendships
-
online media
-
being safe
-
intimate and sexual relationships, including sexual health
Health Education aims to give our young people the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.
By the end of secondary school, pupils will have been taught content on:
-
mental wellbeing
-
internet safety and harms
-
physical health and fitness
-
healthy eating
-
drugs, alcohol and tobacco
-
health and prevention
-
basic first aid
-
changing adolescent body
